Success Story: Nejra Celik recruited to the board of Granngården. Leading with Resilience and Purpose.

From building her career in digital and retail to the recent appointment as a Board Member at Granngården AB, Nejra Celik, deb. program alumni's story is one of resilience and purpose.

Shaped by her early experiences as a refugee in Sweden, she brings authenticity and value-driven leadership to everything she involves herself in. With expertise in omnichannel retail, she is aiming to strengthen the synergy between Granngården’s physical and digital presence. Guided by the belief that “complacency is your worst enemy, and kindness is your best friend,” she inspires others by showing the power of integrity and continuous growth.

Q: Give us a short introduction to yourself.
That’s always the toughest question! If I had to sum it up, I am a mother, friend, partner, leader, and humanitarian. Professionally, I have built a career in digital and retail, with roles spanning from major companies to launching my own venture, empowHER. Most recently, I’ve added "Board Member" to that list with my appointment to Granngården AB´s board.

What truly defines me, though, is my openness and integrity. I firmly believe in sharing my full story - the highs and the lows - because things often are not what they seem from the outside. My life began in Bosnia and my early years as a refugee in Sweden, and while that may not seem directly related to my professional life, it has profoundly shaped the colorful life I lead today. My hope is that by sharing my story, I can inspire others. At my core, I am value-driven, direct, and always looking to bring a little humor into everything I do.

Q: Tell us more about the Board you have joined.
Granngården’s board has recently been refreshed, with a new Chairman of the Board and three new board members: Andreas Rylander (CEO of Kjell & Company), Grete Kvernland-Berg  (Partner at PA Consulting), and myself. It is a diverse team and I am confident that our experiences and perspectives will create a strong foundation for tackling the opportunities and challenges ahead. Granngården AB has an important presence in Sweden, and being part of shaping its future feels very meaningful.

Q: What will be your primary contribution?
My key focus will be in the area of digital and omnichannel retail. While Granngården AB has a strong network of physical stores across the country, its digital platform is also essential for reaching customers, especially in rural areas. My role is to help elevate this digital experience and integrate it with the physical stores.

That said, my approach is always holistic. A board’s role is not about getting lost in the details but ensuring all parts of the business work together to drive growth and profitability.

Q: How has the recruitment process been?
The process was straightforward but thorough. It began with a conversation with the newly appointed Chairman of the Board, where we discussed the competencies needed and the vision for Granngården’s future. We quickly aligned on priorities, and more importantly, we connected overall. For me, it is critical to engage only in opportunities that feel right both professionally and personally.

The final steps were the formalities you would expect. Overall, it has been an efficient and smooth process, and I am excited to now be part of the board.

Q: Finally, share your favorite professional tip.
I have many, as I am constantly evolving and learning, but if I had to highlight one, it is this: Complacency is your worst enemy, and kindness is your best friend. Never settle for less than what you are worth, and remember that kindness, both to yourself and others, is a cornerstone of meaningful professional growth  - especially in the role of a leader.
